"The Innkeepers" - A Cinemasochists Review by Sean

When someone in a horror film says "Don't go in the basement", you should probably NOT go in the basement. But since we are talking horror films, rules need not apply. Horror is the one genre that somehow constantly breaks rules, but also follows them to almost annoying effects. "The Innkeepers" director, Ti West, is a director who likes to follow his own rules. This is his fourth film and the one that followed his very successful 2008 film, "House of The Devil" What remains from that film is a young female protagonist, consistently retro vibe, quiet creepiness and a weird old man.

"The Innkeepers" revolves around a haunted hotel called the Yankee Pedlar Inn and the two minimum wage employees who go on a ghost hunt during the last night of business before it closes down for good.
Claire (Sara Paxton), the bubbly and cute lead along with nerdy, amateur web designer, Luke (Pat Healy, who is quite good here), set out to make contact with a ghost who had been haunting the hotel for decades. Along the way, two final guests show up at the hotel; a retired TV actress turned psychic medium named Leanne (Kelly McGillis) and a strange old man (George Riddle) who insists on staying in a room that has already had it's furniture removed, and claims it's where his honeymoon was 50 years ago.
As Claire befriends LeAnne and the final night drags on, she and Luke (after a few beers) decide to conjure the spirit of the ghost who has supposedly been locked in the basement for years... This is where LeAnne tells Claire ''...Not to go in the basement." But as we know, this is a horror movie...
Director Ti West is a visual filmmaker and has got his own retro, muted color vibe that makes him films seem much older than they are. "House of the Devil" was a very 80's-centric affair while "The Innkeepers" has a more late 70's feel. I kept thinking of "The Shining" which I assume was an influence here with the long hallway pans, quiet tension and of course, haunted hotel theme.
The acting however, is not the saving grace of this film. Pat Healy pulls off a slightly creepy, socially awkward Luke pretty well and Sara Paxton is channeling a bit of Resse Witherspoon's character in "Election" at points, which didn't always work. However, both she and Healy had a lot of screen time together and their chemistry DID work. The first 40 minutes is those two talking and hanging around. The idea that the tension should build and that we should get comfortable with the characters is nice change of pace for a modern horror film, as they usually tend to rush to the blood and guts. Those pieces we're good in theory, but it didn't quite capture me until the very end, which is exactly what I felt after viewing West's "House of the Devil". I am told a second viewing of "House of The Devil" is mandatory. Perhaps my opinion will change after that, but for now I can safely say "The Innkeepers" is good, not great, and I'll be sure to put "House of The Devil" next on my Netflix queue.

Curse Of The Phantom Shadow

Hey friends. We got word on a new independent flick being produced called "Curse Of The Phantom Shadow". It's a sort of 1940's serial in the vein of "Dick Tracy" or "The Spirit" (let's hope it's more the former than the latter) and from what I can see, it looks like it could be a lot of fun.
Being that it's a wholly independent venture, funds have run out and the film-makers created a Kickstarter to finish it out. See the link below for info about the film and how to donate.

Living in Los Angeles, it's pretty easy to spend EVERY NIGHT doing something. There are countless bars, clubs, museums and movie theatres to choose from no matter what day of the week it is. I know that I am guilty of looking for something to do almost every night, as if I'm going to miss some sort of life affirming event. Obviously seeing a flick or a band is not USUALLY life-affirming, especially nowadays with the instant gratification of the internet. However, there is one movie theatre in Los Angeles that if I miss an event, I know I'll regret it, especially this month. The Cinefamily (or, Silent Movie Theatre) is that place and the month of October is probably when they do their finest work. It seems as though they try to find the most gonzo, horrifying and hilarious films on the planet (literally) to share with the LA film scene. The way its curated sometimes seems like a joke. For example, last night I attended a TRIPLE FEATURE of Halloween 2, Nightmare on Elm St. 3 AND Friday The 13th Part 4. It's that kind of daring and winking that makes Cinefamily such a fun place. It feels like you're at a buddies house who happens to own a giant screen.

But enough with the handjob. If you can, go to Cinefamily this month to check out over a dozen more events including a live horror movie score band called NILBOG.

Nude Nuns With Big Guns

I'm sure you have seen or heard of Blaxploitation, but have you seen or heard of Nunsploiation? Probably not until now.

Where do you start with a film like NNWBG? It's bold, brash, trashy and downright awful and it so wants to be a Quentin Tarantino film. It's so bad it's good! With rips direct from “From Dusk till Dawn” and “Desperado” it has all the

ingredients to be good, but simply put, its not!

Where else can you get drug dealing priests, lesbian nuns, nude nuns ( I love the fact they are nude apart from the wimple (headgear) ) that all work in the drug factory nude. I guess it makes the coke better..(?) Like smoking a cigar that's been rolled on the thighs of a virgin! That being said, you don't get subtlety when you buy or rent a film with the title like this.

Just like the Titty Twister bar in "From Dusk Till Dawn" we have in this film, the "Titty Flicker" . Not much of a difference, but you get the point.

After taking her vows to become a nun, Sister Sarah (our heroine) is drugged and abused by the corrupt clergymen. She is beaten so close to death, that she receives a visit from god who tells her she must seek vengeance on all those who did her wrong and crossed her path. Armed with big guns and a message from god she sets out on her own mission of salvation!

The church hires a local biker gang, Los Muertos to track her down and kill her. The gang leader's biggest weapon? You guessed it...His cock

What follows is over the top blood and gore, nuns being raped and some of the worst dialogue ever....

"This Sister is one bad Mother!"

Cinemasochist Review: Hobo With A Shotgun

Hobo With A Shotgun: The Best Movie TROMA Never Made"

Oscar Wilde once said "Talent borrows, genius steals." You can say Quentin Tarantino is a cinematic example of this. He may "steal" everything he does, but I think he makes it his own signature and he "steals" with love and respect. Then there's "Hobo With A Shotgun." For what it is, it's genius. Your mother may not agree with me, but it's definitely, like a Tarantino movie, made with love and because of that, I really enjoyed this film.

The reason I bring up Tarantino is because the origins of this film involve him indirectly. In 2007, director Jason Eisener signed up to make a faux "grindhouse" trailer a la the fake trailers featured in the Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez film "Grindhouse" for the SXSW film festival. The trailer, made for $150, respectively, turned out to be a smashing internet success and WON the contest. Of course, it was inevitable a feature would be made and here we are a few years later. The big question remained; does this 2 1/2 minute concept work as a 90 minute film? It certainly does....If you can handle it.

"Hobo With A Shotgun" stars Rutger Hauer as a train hopping hobo who ends up in a dead end, crime ridden town only to become it's crime fighting vigilante, a la Batman. The town is run by crime boss Drake (Brian Downey) and his two Tom Cruise-esque, Ray-Ban wearing sons Slick (Gregory Smith) and Ivan (Nick Batemen). They are sadistic, immoral, and a bit too over the top at times, but I digress. Our hero, the hobo, finds a lawnmower on sale for $49.99 in a pawn shop and dreams of cleaning up the city. Instead he finds a shotgun and amidst a robbery in the pawn shop, obliterates the criminals with said shotgun. During his crime sweep, he befriends a beautiful young prostitute called Abby (Molly Dunsworth) whom he looks after like a daughter. Their relationship is actually very sweet, and considering the insane, colorful, bloody world we are brought into, very real.

This is one major reason why I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. No matter how depraved, grotesque, or gory it gets, it maintains a sort of humanity. Casting Rutger Hauer was inspired and the scraggily, sad lines in his face are characters in and of themselves. The characters are played straight when needed and are turned up to 11 when needed. The villains, like I said can be a bit over the top, but that's part of the appeal. It's strictly a genre film. If you grew up with this VHS blood stained, synthesizer heavy muck, you'll get a kick out of the nods to other classic horror films (Dead Alive, Escape From New York, Street Trash, etc). If you didn't grow up with it and are willing to let it be what it is, it's still very entertaining and it certainly flies by at a frenetic 86 minutes. And unlike "Grindhouse" it doesn't wink at us, nor is it missing reels. It is what it is and you get what you get. So, leave your taste in the car and enjoy "Hobo With A Shotgun" because I certainly did.

Score: 0 out of -10 (perfect)

"Hobo With A Shotgun" will roll out in limited release starting May 6th, but if you can't wait (and don't) it's available NOW on VOD!!

APPETIZER

Guacamole with BITE, served with fresh baked Shark Fin shaped whole wheat tortilla chips.

GUAC WITH BITE

Nothing says a day at sea like lounging on a leisurely boat ride, sipping a Great White ale, and dipping a whole wheat chip into big bowl of fresh guacamole.

That is…

UNTIL THE GUACAMOLE ATTACKS YOUR PALLET AND ALL HELLFIRE BREAKS LOOSE IN YOUR MOUTH!

Mush 3 avocados – and mush ‘em good.

Sprinkle in some garlic salt to taste

Add a lime. Heck, add a splash of lemon juice!

Give it a stir and add:

1 bunch of chopped cilantro

1/2 a chopped red onion

2 chopped tomatoes (the firmer and fresher from the vine, the better!)

Sprinkle in some crushed red pepper.

Then sprinkle in some MORE pepper! Black, red whatever. (do sprinkle though, don’t pour – you don’t want to kill your friends – they’re already suffering through Jaws: The Revenge…)

Slice up a jalapeno! Throw it in your sea of guacamole sea for bait!

WHOLE WHEAT CHIPS

Sure you can buy them in a bag from the store, but ask yourself - do sharks prefer store-bought, pre-packaged meals? Or meals of the fresher, more tender variety..?

Slice whole wheat tortillas into fun shark fin shaped triangles.

Spread them on cookie trays.

Cover lightly with olive oil, salt, and a little black pepper.

Bake for about 20 minutes @ 250.

I served mine “wet chip” style, in honor of the great white silver screen star, but if you want a really crispy chip, bake em a little longer.

MAIN COURSE

Shark-like Swordfish soft tacos with Lamnidae Lentils

SWORDFISH

The shark. The swordfish.

Two meaty creatures of the sea.

Both have names begin with the letter S.

One, was available for purchase on Sunday afternoon before the Cinemasochists podcast. The other, was not.

2 fillets of swordfish – thickly sliced. (feeds 8)

Marinate for a few hours in lime, cilantro, and a tad of olive oil.

Add a can of chopped tomatoes if you want the fish to have a nice bloody, shark-bitten look to it.

Slice fish into taco size serving pieces.

Heat olive oil in a frying pan.

Dip fish in: Soy milk, egg, bread crumbs, and throw it in the pan.

If your fish is VERY fresh, you can sear the swordfish.

If you’re not sure, cook the fish until it is fork flaky tender.

Heat your tortillas (I used corn in honor of the corny special effects – but flour will work just as well)

LENTILS

If you haven’t been drinking beer at a Whole Foods beer tasting for about 4 hours before you are prepping your meal, you should buy your lentils fresh, soak them in salt water, and boil them up with spices to taste.

If you HAVE been drinking beer at a Whole Foods beer tasting for about 4 hours before you are prepping your meal, you should just heat up a bag of Steamed Lentils from Trader Joe’s.

The instructions are on the bag, and the consistency delightfully compliments the swordfish.

DESSERT

Blood Orange Sorbet and Navel Orange Slices / Kelsey’s Killer Cookie Pie

The BLOOD orange sorbet is self explanatory.

Kudos to cinemasofriend Kelsey for bringing over her killer cookie pie. Some folks claimed it was a tad undercooked…but then again, I think sharks always prefer their courses served extra rare!

Eric's 2010 Year In Review

Eric's 2010 Year in Review

2010 was one of the worst years in film. Again we were bombarded with forgettable sequels and remakes. Top filmmakers such as the Coen brothers, Ridley Scott, Darren Aronofsky and (now serial sell-out) Tim Burton produced disappointing movies. I did manage to find some standouts though:

WINTERS BONE
Rookie filmmaker Debra Granik managed to create the western I wanted veteran filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen to make. You couldnt help but notice actors and sets in the manicured and sterile True Grit. Winter's Bone takes place in the gritty, suspicious Ozarks, where young kids are forced to grow up early. In the year's best performance, Jennifer Lawrence searched the lawless backwoods for her father. And who knew Eastbound and Down's John Hawkes (Kenny Power's brother) could act? Hawkes gives a chilly performance as a violent relative we arent sure can be trusted. The polar opposite of the disappointing, conventional True Grit- thrilling, dark and realistic. Its a western, detective and mafia movie all rolled into one. Coens and Haile Steinfeld take note.

SOCIAL NETWORK
Dont be put of by the plot- a retelling of the origins of Facebook. David Fincher redeems himself after the Benjamin Button fiasco with the engrossing story about the power of an idea. Aaron Sorkin's rapid fire script is truly one of a kind. To make a thrilling film about a series of conversations is very impressive.

Ben Stiller is capable of delivering a great performance in the hands of a skilled director (especially himself). Filmmaker Noah Baumbach never does wrong in my book ever since writing "The Life Aquatic..."with Wes Anderson. Stiller's Greenberg is neurotic, irritable and narcissistic. His failed musician returns to LA to housesit for his brother and then ruins any scene he visits. Baumbach's films and pain-in-the-ass protagonists make you feel uncomfortable, but their despicable leads are fun to laugh at. They always make for great character studies and no one learns a thing (sometimes you gotta love when that happens). No more Fockers, Stiller!

127 HOURS
Danny Boyle is also a reliably great filmmaker. Told he couldnt make a thrilling film about a guy with his arm stuck in a rock for two hours, he delivered just that. I even admired James Franco's performance, though I'm usually annoyed with this poster boy for multi-hyphenate actors. An inventive film about the importance of relationships and having a connection to nature.

THE FIGHTER
David O. Russel is another director who does no wrong. Dont be fooled by the trailer- this is no conventional underdog sports film. Russell tells the true story of a Boston boxer who must escape his large, loony and obnoxious family in order to succeed in the ring. An excellent supporting cast and I loved the HBO-style video cinematography during the great boxing scenes.

My other favorites were TOY STORY 3 (loved the inspired nods to classic prison escape and mafia films),THE KINGS SPEECH (yes, it was an Oscary theatrical British drama, but good story, good acting), INCEPTION (dont watch it more than once though- youll see its mainly exposition and not much action. But its undeniably original and includes the best fight scene in years) and SHUTTER ISLAND.

In the So Bad Theyre Good category, THE WOLFMAN, PIRANHA and THE EXPENDABLES produced enjoyable camp. 80s/90s Shoot-Em-Ups (see: Eastwood, Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, Seagal, ect) and Creature Rampage genres are some of my favorites.These ones delivered everything I was looking for and (seemed to) know the ridiculous limits they were pushing. Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins gives his worst performance since Instinct and at one point dons a wolfman outfit in an over-the-top battle with Benicio del Toro! Such good wolf battles! As you can see, with these three on my top list, it wasnt such a good film year was it?

Dinner, and a movie.

The timeless art of romantic seduction, dating back to the days of Shakespeare.

Who amongst us could forget the moment in which Romeo and Juliet ever-so-cinematically laid eyes upon one another for the first time in 1996 through that stupid fish tank at the annual Capulet masquerade dinner party. I was eating popcorn, but I probably would have found some redemption in that god-awful scene had someone handed me a bucket of caviar instead.

And so, in true cinemasochist style, Mama Maria’s kitchen has opened its ovens this year in the hopes of finding some semblance of appropriate meals that will help viewers, if nothing else, eat their way through moronic movies.

Winner of last year’s best Culinary CineMENUchists Meal:

KING KONG: Monkeying Around In the Kitchen.

Tostones topped with fresh shrimp and cilantro ceviche.

For dessert, we enjoyed chocolate dipped banana Monkey Pops (or, as the locals more commonly now refer to them: Shitty Dick Sticks) – thanks to Claire Crespo for the inspiration for those ediblely inappropriate gems.

Which brings us to 2011 and the first cinemenu of the year.

APPETIZER

Monterey JACK cheese and “Crack-a-Fat” crackers.

MAIN DISH

“Rip Snortin” Rissoles w/ Baked “Bushman” Butternut Squash & “Fair Dinkum” Fennel

RISSOLE

If a croquette and a meatball had an Australian baby, it would be a perfect meat patty and they would name it rissole.

1/2 red onion, finely chopped

1 bunch fresh parsley, chopped

2 eggs

A sprinkle of spiced seasonings to taste.

Ground turkey burger.

Mix ingredients together and shape into palm-size patties.

Coat patties in flour.

Brown Rissoles in sauce pan with olive oil.

BAKED BUTTERNUT SQUASH & FENNEL

Slice the butternut squash and chop off the rind – feel free to make fun shapes with your slices – much like the fun facial expressions of Kangaroo Jack himself!

Place them in a baking pan.

Thinly slice a bulb of fennel and sprinkle slices generously over the butternut squash.

Cover with olive oil and paprika.

Bake at 350 until fennel is browned and the squash is fork-poke soft.

DESSERT

“Down Under” Damper w/ “Ankle Biter” Apples.

Despite its unappetizing name, Damper is a delightfully light sweet bread which looks

and tastes much like a scone. You can make this over an open fire, in true kangaroo style, or in a regular oven, like the rest of the civilized world.

DAMPER w/ APPLES

2 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons sugar

2 tablesoons butter

1 cup soy milk

3 baby jazz apples

Chop and pre-bake apples covered in sugar, butter, and cinnamon at 350 for about 20 mintues.

Mix flour, salt, and sugar together in a bowl.

Cut butter into small bits and knead it into the flour mixture forming a bread crumb-like consistency.

Add milk and knead again until your hands are too sticky to turn on the sink without making a mess or getting stuck to the faucet.

Flatten the dough onto a sheet of parchment paper.

Separate into circular-ish pieces. Fill the small dough pieces (ala turnover style) with apples.

Bake again for another 20-30 minutes at 350.

Try and enjoy your meal, despite the fact that you are watching Kangaroo Jack.

We here at Cinemasochists celebrate all things BAD in cinema. We don't want to add insult to injury, so we're not out for blood. I've personally, grown quite a tolerance and even fondness for crappy films. I even apply the criteria I use on this show as a way to rate "good" films. The threshold has gotten very high and I must say, it makes me appreciate even the most "average" of films.

Supposedly, this year brought on a SLEW of trite garbage, like The Bounty Hunter, Valentines Day, Last Airbender, etc. I have not seen most of these films, but I'm sure 2011 will bring a few to our podcast. If we give it at least a year, at least we have perspective.

That being said, I've put together a list of enjoyable cinematic experiences for 2010. . I have not seen all of the films I was "supposed" to see, but of what I've seen, this is what I dug the most!

BEST WORST MOVIE - It was a pleasure interviewing Michael Paul Stephenson and Dr. Hardy this last summer for the podcast. Everything about this documentary is genuine. In the age of irony, this documentary proves that Troll 2 isn't just a joke, but a sincere look into an eccentric mans mind and the joy films can bring to people, whether it's "good" or "bad".

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP - On the other hand, here's a documentary that is about art and how the media and money turn it on its head and make it something it actually isn't. It's brilliantly executed regardless if it's a hoax or not. Sorry, Joaquin Phoenix......

BLACK SWAN - As I watched this in a crowded theatre, I realized I was the only one laughing... Is the joke on me? Not sure, but seeing this bombastic piece of dare I say, exploitation, made me want to go read Fangoria and watch Suspiria again. I was not expecting to react the way I did, but I commend Darren Aronofsky for bringing this to the table. This may be his best work yet. It's simplicity is, I believe, on purpose and I appreciate that because on the surface it seems more than it is. See this in a big, loud movie theatre.

INCEPTION/SHUTTER ISLAND - Speaking of bombastic...This film had to be so big, that Hans Zimmer commissioned a Dinosaur orchestra to pull off his score. How great is it that in this "recession" era, we get an original movie that costs more than a few European countries and it actually worked? Christopher Nolan's epic wasn't as emotionally involved as Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" but both looked amazing and hopefully we can see more stuff like this in the next few years.

TRUE GRIT/ WINTERS BONE - Two films about young girls putting their noses where they shouldn't. One is brown and dusty, the other blue and muggy. One is uplifting and fun while the other is kind of slow and heartbreaking. Both had amazing performances in the young female protagonists, a creepy villain (John Hawkes was especially outstanding in Winters Bone) and an off kilter crew of supporting players that I wasn't sure if I should laugh or feel sorry for them. Most importantly though, they both gestated in my brain long after watching and after I initially shrugging BOTH off, I have come to love them both and can't wait to see them again.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK / SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD - My two most enjoyable filmgoing experiences of the year came from 2 very opposite films. While Fincher's Social Network uses words as action, Edgar Wright's SPVTW uses intricate, A.D.D. editing and video game visuals as action. Both leads (Jesse Eisenberg and Michael Cera) are mistaken for each other in real life and both characters are tragic, yet confident social misfits who will do whatever it takes to get a girls attention. On the surface they seem to be about something else, but really they're both about young men figuring themselves out, even if it involves the loss of friends or digital dragons....

Honorable mentions: Machete, 127 Hours, Despicable Me

Cinemasochists review of SPLICE

We'll often times ignore a critic's advice and check out a film for ourselves. We think that maybe they've missed something or they're pretentious. Films like "Fight Club," "Big Lebowski" and "Moulin Rouge!" were condemned by many critics but have found late life praise for their originality. SPLICE is not one of those instances. This film is crap.

Let's start with the plot, which already throws a red flag. This is the type of film that could have gone one of two ways- a creepy thriller about the moral complexities of genetic engineering, or a SyFy original about a killer amphibious humanoid on the loose.

SPLICE goes the latter route. Only its not campy and entertaining in the way an Android Apocalypse or Mansquito could possibly be. It thinks its raising Important Issues. Yes, it's one of THOSE films.

SPLICE tells the story of two hotshot biochemists who ignore pleas from their lab and secretly go through with splicing animal and human DNA. They hope the resulting creature's genetic makeup might yield new medicines (and shoot them to science stardom in the process). Of course, things don't go exactly as they hope.

The tense and dark first half gives nods to tone, pace and even some imagery of Ridley Scott's Alien or a Cronenberg film. I couldn't wait to see the hideous mutant, soon to evolve, that you KNOW would want to get its comeuppance. With a director like Scott or Cronenberg at the helm, the film would have surely continued the sense of menace this provocative premise promised.

Instead, writer-director Vincenzo Natali gives us an. . . . ACTOR. The LAST thing we want. The creature evolves into a bald, dancing teenage mutant with CGI chicken legs and a stinging tail named Dren. We're meant to sympathize with and yearn for an ACTOR portraying the creature's development of FEELINGS. . . . and raging hormones. Dren throws teenage temper tantrums (and not in a cool, destructive movie monster way) and, of course, yearns to. . . . love. Give me a break. (This includes SEXUAL feelings, by the way, in the film's TWO (!!) ridiculous Jump the Shark moments)

The only serviceable performance comes from Sarah Polley, who juggles a range of emotion that her troubled character goes through. But by the time her character is raped in the climax by the creature (Don't ask.), you wonder how she ever got involved? Adrien Brody plays a weak and pitiful character which makes you unable to care about a single person in the film. The actors playing Dren are so frustratingly awful that it makes me type hard as I write this sentence. Their acting range is so limited, all we really get are the facial expressions of a confused toddler. When we finally get to the unsatisfying rampage climax, you're done waiting for it to deliver, and of course, it doesn't.

Whatever you do, avoid this stinker at all costs. This isn't "Batman Forever," a bad film that's entertaining nonetheless. This is "Batman and Robin," a complete waste of time. But at least you are spared the Creature's First Dance Sequence (in 360 degree POV slow motion, of course) on that one.

DY-NO-MITE!

When I was in my early teens, I had a very steady diet of blaxploitation films. It wasn't so much a diet as it was a 2 year binge. Needless to say, my brain was filled with crackheads, gunfights, afros and cheap, but sincere filmmaking. I would go to the video store after school every day and find any movie with a title that started with "Black". Being a horror fan, I gravitated to "Blacula" or "Blackenstein" but after awhile I found "Black Godfather" and "Fass Black" (the cover art for the latter had literally NOTHING to do with the film... God bless XENON VIDEO).

But the one title that made the biggest impact on me over the years and one I can still watch is Rudy Ray Moore's "Dolemite". It was essentially a parody of "Superfly", "Shaft" et al. What made it work for me was not just the humor, but the fact that it was so cheap and amateurish that by the time the movie ended it was parody of itself.

The difference between "Dolemite" and the 2009 film "Black Dynamite" is that "Dolemite" was not too aware of it's so bad it's good quality. "Black Dynamite" is VERRRRRY aware of it, almost to a fault.

Michael Jai White (Spawn) plays "Black Dynamite" and amalgam of every blaxploitation hero. With a handlebar 'stache, leather jacket and nun chucks in his backpocket, B.D. wants to rid the city of drug dealers who are selling "this new smack" to children, especially children in orphanages (he was once an orphan) as well as find the man who killed his brother.

With help from Corn Bread (Tommy Davidson) Bullhorn (Byron Minns) and his all girl army of kung-fu killers (...Dolemite, anyone?) B.D. cleans up the city only to find out that it goes much higher than local drug dealers...Much higher. You can say the "honky house" may have something to do with it...

"Black Dynamite" is hilarious. It takes EVERY blaxploitation cliche and hits you on the head with it like the back of a 9mm, but in an endearing way. They LOVED making this film and it shows. I honestly was not expecting it to go as far as it did, in terms of homage. It was stylized to such a point, that by the end of it I was little tired. Needless to say, the out of focus shots, the use of stock footage and the exposed boom mic brought me back to my said pre teens years and made me feel good.

Director Scott Sanders got it all right. In fact, it may be the perfect parody film. My only issue is that he knew it all too well. It was almost a meta comedy because like Dolemite, the movie started to parody itself. So you could say it was a parody of a parody of a parody....

This doesn't mean you shouldn't see this (it's on NETFLIX stream), in fact, you should see it now! It's a great party film and it's even more rich if you're a follower of blaxploitation and grindhouse 70's action schlock....Oh yeah, Arsenio Hall is a drug dealing pimp...

Machete: A Robert Rodriguez joint

Robert Rodriguez has always made "fun" movies. Watching them, you feel like a little kid again even though there may be a decapitation or two. His movies aren't childish, so much as they are filled with so much energy and passion that you can't help but to smile and go for the ride. This is probably why his foray into kids films (Spy Kids) worked out pretty well. Machete is definitely of the same ilk, but this time there's an actual message under the gore. Don't worry though, this isn't a Gus Van Sant film. This is still the gratuitous, obscene, ridiculous Robert Rodriguez you've grown to love. He just has a little more to say.

Machete (Danny Trejo) is an ex federale who went rogue after a drug kingpin Torrez (Steven Seagal...wow.) beheaded his wife and murdered his daughter. Three years later he is hired by Micheal Benz (Jeff Fahey...WOWIE!) to assassinate a US Senator played by Robert DeNiro (Doing a hilarious DUBBYA impression) who wants to put an electrified fence across the US / Mexico border to keep the "creatures, vermin" out of the country. Turns out, Machete was set up to be a Mexican scapegoat assassin and Benz is actually working with the Senator as well as a tough as nails border guard played by Don Johnson (triple wow!!!).

After a few dozen be-headings, he recruits help from his brother, Padre Benito Del Toro (Cheech Marin..Amazing.), Luz (Michelle Rodriguez) and Immigration agent Sartana, played by Jessica Alba to take down the chain of bad guys one by one.

Danny Trejo is quite good as Machete. He doesn't have too much to say, which might be a good thing, but when he does he delivers some whoppers like "Machete don't text." For a film that is so ludicrous, it really does wrap itself up nicely and always finishes what it started. I've heard some say it may be too long. I disagree. I think it's just right and the pace is pretty consistent throughout, which can be uncommon for Rodriguez films.

I call Machete a Mexican Spike Lee movie. Within the sort of heavy handed portrayal of US / Mexico border relations, Rodriguez manages to also poke fun at the issue as well. For example, one immigrant telling another something to the effect of "...I'm already in America. I don't care if they make the fence" It's that Spike Lee style of having your message be heard loud and clear, but also telling the other side of it too that makes it that much more poignant and relevant.

Machete is out now in wide release. Try to see it in a crowded theatre or group of friends. Alcohol is optional...

Jason Lives. And Lives. And Lives.

Friday The 13th comes along once maybe twice a year and whenever it does, I dust off my old Friday The 13th VHS (now DVD) collection and endure one or maybe two titles. This all started when I was realllly young. Cable channels like USA, TBS or TNT would play marathons all night long. How could a pre-pubescent horror fan resist?? It was a nice way to begin a tradition that continues 20 years later......But I digress.
Today I watched "FT13th part 5: A New Beginning" while half paying attention and working at the same time. Here's what I got out of it...
Last time we saw our pal Jason Voorhees, he was chopped up into manwich meat by Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman) in a fit of rage. The "surprise ending" implies that Tommy had inexplicably got Jasons soul transferred into his. (Is that right??)
Part 5: "A New Beginning" begins with a rainy night in the woods (duh!) where Tommy Jarvis (still Mr. Feldman here) happens upon Jasons grave, where it stands alone. Tommy hides in the bushes when he sees a couple guys show up to dig out Jasons body. It's actually not under the ground so it makes it pretty easy for these guys to dig it up. Luckily, Jason was buried with his machete so when it came time for that coffin to open he was ready to attack. And attack he did! The reason I actually picked this installment of the FT13th legacy was becuase of this scene specifically. I vividly remember it during these marathons when I was a kid and it actually creeped me out! As Tommy hides in the bushes, Jason rises from the ground, looks straight at Tommy and slowly walk toward him, knife in the air. In a non-effective film, that scene is actually quite effective. It's too bad the rest of the 100 minutes don't quite cut it...Pun intended.
Turns out this was just a dream and Tommy is actually much older (not Corey Feldman anymore) and is being carted off to a teen half way house out in what looks like Crystal Lake. Here at "Pinehurst" we meet your usual horror film teens, except they all have some physical or psychological issue. It's still not much of a stretch considering there's a bimbo, a rocker, a token black (who is about 8 years younger than everyone else), a hunk, the comic relief rednecks and an annoying fat guy. All the major 80's staples are accounted for here.
I can't really say much else about this movie because not much else happens. At all. It's quite boring, actually. Which is a shame because some of the kills in this one are actually quite good. There's a road flare into the mouth, garden shears to a naked womans head, a impaling on a toilet and your typical axe to the head. All the bits in between dont really go anywhere. It's all set up to kill these (non dimensional?) characters. The real plot I guess revolves around Tommy, but he's barely in it. He'll show up here and there and that's supposed to imply that maybe the killer is Tommy. He wasnt, which leads me to the most annoying thing about this movie....

SPOILERS FOR FT13TH 5 !!
JASON WASNT EVEN THE KILLER! There was no Jason. It was a minor character that we see at the beginning doing a copycat thing...I don't know where he wouldve gotten the mask, but I digress....

Horror Musical Marathon Number 3: NOCTURNA! Granddaughter of Dracula

After a long hiatus, I am back for part 3 of my "Horror Musical" Marathon! I have a feeling I was subconsciously trying to delay because I kinda knew what I was in for with this one...

Nocturna; Grand Daughter of Dracula is a (you ready?) SEX DISCO MUSICAL! Well, not entirely a musical. No one actually breaks into song and dance randomly, but about 50 of the 75 minutes of this film is filled with generic disco (Generic enough for me to fish out a soundtrack on Ebay...) by the likes of Gloria Gaynor and Moment of Truth (?). The other 25 minutes?? Well, let me explain.....

Count Dracula (played by John Carradine) is getting old, running a hotel in Transylvania for tax reasons because he's poor and all he really wants is for his grand daughter, Nocturna to find a man and be happy. "How about that werewolf down the road?" he asks.. Didn't we learn from Twilight that werewolves and vampires CAN'T co exist? Duh, grandpa! And another thing...VAMPIRES DON'T AGE!

Whatever.

So, Nocturna meets the new house band in the hotel and immediately hits it off with the guitarist, Jimmy who looks like Pygar from "Barbarella". They talk for too long, then we watch them make out in the nude for too long. Nocturna then decides that she is in love and wants to live with this mortal musician in New York. So she goes regardless of what Pappy Dracula says.

While in New York she meets up with the B.S.A. (Blood Suckers of America) and meets Jugula, a sort of motherly figure who happens to be kind of a whore. The B.S.A. is quite a motley crew. Stereotypes run amok with an Italian gangster, a black pimp, an old Jewish couple and a few prostitutes. As it turns out the major cities have a shortage of good blood because of sugar, cocaine and other 1970's vices. Too many diabetics and junkies for vamps to suck on....

Even though she is advised against it by grandpa and Jugula, she keeps pursuing Jimmy and decides she wants to be mortal. After a grass smoking scene, she confides in Jimmy and tells him that she is who she is. Jimmy doesnt seem to care. I don't either. The acting is horrendous and this is basically a glorified porno, which is why this movie is so frustrating. It doesn't know what it is or what it wants. The sex isn't titilating, the comedy is far from funny and I have feeling that this movie was only made to sell disco LP's.

Nocturna, played by Nai Bonet is essentially a brick wall. She doesn't blink and she doesn't emote. It's quite frustrating because this is HER movie. John Carradine as the aging Dracula looks as depressed and half dead as his character does. Poor guy. He even has to pretend to enjoy a sex scene in a coffin with Jugula. Groan. Groan. Groan.

Score: -9.

It would've been -10 but I kind of enjoyed the soundtrack. (5 more days in my Ebay auction!)

Reedemable?; No. This thing seems like fun on paper, but its not. Not at all. So don't bother.

Terror On Tour or: "...They sound like a buncha vultures at a BBQ"

Part 2 of my "Horror Rock Musical" marathon spectacular!!

"Loose girls, drugs, booze, you know the scene!"

I do now, thanks to "Terror On Tour". This KISS meets "Friday The 13th" cash in was directed by Don Edmunds and released in 1980. Its about "Loose girls, drugs and booze..."

You know the story.

A costumed, Cheap Trick sounding band called "The Clowns" are on tour (funny, though..They seem to play the same venue every night....) and shooting "straight to the top!" Their costumes are something to behold. Black tights, red capes, black and white face paint and afro wigs (!). Unlike KISS, each member looks exactly the same, which is convenient for the plot. See, these "Clowns" have a staged act that consists of stabbing and maiming various female audience members. One night, some drug dealing whore dies for real and we're lead to believe its one of "The Clowns" since the perpetrator was in full "Clowns" regalia.

What happens in the next 75 minutes is a lack luster, uninteresting whodunnit. Two cops are on the case and are totally convinced its the band. Is it the pill popping drummer? The wildman guitarist? The jaded singer? The nice guy manager? Or is it the 2 roadies? Each guy has a motive....Kind of.... I guess. Either way, the killer essentially gives himself away in the first 5 minutes.. Sorry. SPOILER!

Did I forget to mention all the gratuitous violence and sex in this film? I just did. There's plenty of it any horror hound with patience of a saint might actually enjoy this.

Since I am talking about music in this marathon, I must say I really dug the music in this film. It's not much of a musical, but there are about 4 set pieces built around the music of "The Clowns". The songs were all written by a Chicago band called "The Names". It's perfect in that late seventies, post punk, pre power pop kind of way. Like I said, it has a great Cheap Trick quality to it. If anyone out there has MP3's of these tunes, please send em my way. I'd love to have them!

That being said, the most redeemable aspect of "Terror On Tour" was the music and I'm sure that was on purpose. The rest is slightly entertaining. The are many unintentional chuckles and fun, albeit boring death set ups. But if you have a short attention span, don't bother. If you intend on obtaining it, good luck. It's pretty hard to find, since only VHS copies were made. I would say finding the soundtrack would be a better time waster... Happy hunting!!

The 6 Most Frightening Scenes in Supposedly "Family" Films

I'd like to take the topic off of stultifyingly terrible movies for just a moment, and concentrate on what instead are some of my all time favorite movie scenes. These being, truly and utterly horrifying scenes in what are otherwise pleasant, family approved films. So without further ado, here are what I consider the six most frightening of them.

#6 - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: "The Child Catcher"

In this film, Dick Van Dyke plays an eccentric inventor in early 20th century england named Caractacus Potts, who invents a flying car that his family name Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, then, from what I can discern, some craziness ensues. Now, considering that the screenplay for this movie was written by the guy who wrote Willy Wonka and James and the Giant Peach and was adapted from a novel by the guy who invented James Bond, there's bound to be some pretty crazy shit in it. And, sure enough, here's the Child Catcher. A sinister mad man who kidnaps children so that he can, I assume, bring them into his lair, ripped them to pieces while they're still alive and feast on their raw flesh.

#5 - The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T: "The Singing Elevator Dungeon Master"

This is the only live action film to ever be written by Theodor Geisel (aka: Dr. Seuss), and as a result it's also quite bizarre. The production design is amazing, and there's a lot of great imagery, an example being two old men on roller skates connected by a single beard. The most frightening image though, is the hooded elevator operator/dungeon master who sings of the horrible torture devices as poor unfortunate souls descend into the deepest depths of Dr. T's dungeon. Truly the stuff of nightmares.

#4 - The Wizard of Oz: "The Flying Monkeys"

There are few other movie scenes that have scared as many children as the attack of the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz. Just look at them swarming like the dark messengers of death.

#3 - Return to Oz: "The Wheelers"

And from the Wizard of Oz's sort of sequel we have our next entry. Honestly, I'm kind of cheating here, because there's very little in this film which isn't scary. From the moaning heard in the insane asylum where Dorothy is brought at the beginning to the Witch Queen and her hall of screaming heads, this movie is right up there with The Exorcist and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Still, it's supposed to be a family picture, so I think this entry counts. And the wheelers are pretty fucking frightening.

#2 - Darby O'Gill and the Little People: "The Banshee"

This is a Disney film full of leprechauns, pots o' gold, and other fanciful Irish mythology. It also stars Sean Connery, which I figure just meant that the producers assumed that Americans wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Scottish and an Irish accent. The real star of this film though, is the shrieking banshee.

“You Know I Just Wanna ROCK-U-LA or; I Can’t Make This Shit Up”

Every Tuesday for the next 6 weeks I'm going to write about a different "Horror Rock Musical" that I've unearthed from the vaults of cinema crap-dom. I decided to start my marathon with 1990's “Rockula”. It’s actually an interesting choice, considering how it wasn’t much of a horror film, more like a sex-comedy musical about a cursed vampire in love. I think. I don’t know…I should’ve started with something else… Oh well.

Our protagonist, Ralph is a 300 year old vampire stuck in a 20 something’s body. His mother, played by Toni Basil is also a centuries old vampire stuck in a 20 something’s body…She likes to sing….

Poor Ralph has been cursed. Every 22 years he runs into, Mona, the girl of his dreams. But every time he finds her, these goddamn peg legged pirates kidnap her and take her away. WHAT?!?! Yeah, this whole movie is chock full of ‘em.

So, Ralph’s friends consist of a couple bar dudes, his reflection and Bo Diddley…No, really. Bo Diddley. Luckily the bar dudes and Bo can play instruments because the only way to impress this 1980’s incarnation of Mona is to be a rock star because Mona too, is a rock star.

The villain is Stanley (played with hammy perfection by Thomas Dolby) and he will stop at nothing to divert Mona’s attention away from Ralph. He even somehow obtains a cryogenic freezing chamber from a gypsy to capture Mona and freeze her so she doesn’t have to kiss Ralph….. (?) Whatever. Either way, after a half dozen or more genre jumping musical numbers (RAPULA anyone?) and a confusing confrontation with Stanley, Ralph gets the girl and they live eternally ever after.

Rockula is forgotten for a reason. It’s very much a cash-in of Porky’s, Teen Wolf, Monster Squad and perhaps Rocky Horror Picture Show. Although as silly and slightly entertaining as it is, by the end I’m bored to tears and I have a sneaking suspicion the people involved in making this were too. Don’t expect the Rockula remake anytime soon. This will be stuck in the vaults forever.

Between "Horror Rock" and a "Hard" Place!

For the last 30 years, horror films and rock and roll ( and mostly Heavy Metal) have kinda gone hand in hand. I suppose its the whole Devil Worshipping and wearing all black thing...
That connection has inspired countless hack film makers to cash in and make slasher films with a "Heavy Metal" twist. Titles such as "Hard Rock Zombies" and "Rocktober Blood" SOUND good, but the execution makes me tired and kinda cranky after about 10 minutes. Although, big blonde haired rock gods fighting demon puppets is a very special thing, I must say I dont think I could handle more than one or two of these films in a year. So, being the "cinemasochist" I am, I decided I'm gonna watch 6....Yes, 6 of them!
However, I don't want to stick to the "Heavy Metal" formula. As I fished through Cinefile Video (shameless plug),I found that there are a plethora of other music-genre-80's-slasher cash-ins.

I will not be doing a Podcast with Michael on this endeavour. I would rather not subject my friend to such agony. So, every week expect a new review.

Our goal is find out, in retrospect, if these films are as bad as they seemed. Are they redeemable? Are they even watchable? Worry not, good film lovers; we are here to do it so you don't have to.

We will do our best to do one film a week and record a play by play of sorts for your listening pleasure. We will watch said films together and immediately after, vomit our thoughts into a microphone. Sometimes the vomit will be tasty, other times, not. But, that's how it goes when tackling an endeavor such as this. It's a crap shoot. And it's also crap.
